If System Protection is turned on, Windows automatically creates shadow copies of files that have been modified since the last restore point was made, which is typically once a day. This service is turned on by default on all versions, but as mentioned, Microsoft grants access to these copies only in select editions. To get the previous versions of any file, one right-clicks the file and selects Restore Previous Versions.
